IEEE-USA President's Message

Ned R. Sauthoff
2001 IEEE-USA President

Welcome to IEEE-USA Policy Perspectives, our new monthly webzine dedicated to addressing topics in both career policy and technology policy, including the status of pending legislation and IEEE-USA position statements. Policy Perspectives is one piece in a package of complementary publications we have launched as part of a comprehensive communications program to reach all U.S. members. With Policy Perspectives, not only will you be able to read about the issues as they are unfolding; you will always be given opportunities and incentives to act.

Based on surveys and studies of member preferences, our communications program is well-rounded; each publication focuses on a critical aspect of the technical profession. As an IEEE U.S. member, you now have monthly access to Policy Perspectives the moment you connect to the Internet. In addition, we're pleased to offer you:

  • IEEE-USA Today's Engineer (www.todaysengineer.org/careerfocus), IEEE-USA’s new monthly webzine dedicated to providing information on careers in electrotechnology and information technology, on products useful for building your career, and on professional development issues for engineers today. With Today’s Engineer, we will be able to provide you with timely information about the many career issues that IEEE members face in today’s dynamic and diverse technical workplace.

  • IEEE-USA News and Views, our quarterly print magapaper, which will include articles to help you build your career and alert you to IEEE-USA products and activities that help shape public policy in the areas of career policy and technology policy. News and Views will also include highlights of the articles and items published in our new webzines. Look for it in the polybag with the March 2001 IEEE Spectrum and The Institute.

Each webzine has an "opt-in" notification service (www.todaysengineer.org/emailupdates), where you can sign-up to receive an e-mail each time a new issue of the webzine is posted on the IEEE-USA website.

You, the member, are the most effective messengers of the perspectives of engineers to your Congressional representatives and senators. As former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill said, "All politics is local." Our electronic grassroots outreach program enables you to keep track of developing legislation and issues that affect our members and the engineering profession.

You can receive regular news about our public-policy efforts in your e-mail inbox by subscribing to IEEE-USA's Eye on Washington newsletter at http://www.ieeeusa.org/emailupdates. You can also sign up to join an IEEE-USA grassroots issue network to receive legislative alerts on specific issues of interest at www.ieeeusa.org/forum/grassroots/. Once subscribed, our legislative alert system will give you timely notice of opportunities to contact your Congresspersons on matters that affect your career and/or the contribution of electrotechnology and information technology to the quality of life.

Finally, our Policy Forum (http://www.ieeeusa.org/forum) and Legislative Action Center (http://congress.nw.dc.us/ieeeusa) provide a variety of tools and resources to help educate you about the issues, help you prepare letters to your Congresspersons, or provide you with material for a visit to your Congressperson’s district office.

These new communications products are an integral part of IEEE-USA’s program — aimed at building careers and shaping public policy. In the area of building careers, IEEE-USA sponsors conferences and symposia; develops and disseminates career development tools; argues for a strong U.S. engineering workforce through programs ranging from precollege to continuing education, and through permanent immigration; and supports pension portability for a mobile workforce. In shaping technology policy, IEEE-USA works for reliable restructuring of the electric supply industry; strong research and development through both industrial tax incentives and federal funding; fair intellectual property rights in today’s economy; and the privacy and reliability of the information infrastructure.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Policy Perspectives, and we invite you to sign up for our webzine update notifications and legislative alerts.

Best regards,

Ned R. Sauthoff
2001 IEEE-USA President
