Resources for Members

By Abby Robinson

Each month, Today’s Engineer highlights five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1. IEEE-USA in ACTION Mobile App

An app for IEEE-USA in ACTION, IEEE-USA's quarterly electronic publication, is now available for download from the iTunes store. The app is free and compatible with iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. IEEE-USA in ACTION highlights IEEE-USA programs, products, services and activities. Once the app is downloaded, new issues of IEEE-USA in ACTION will automatically be added to your device four times a year.

2. IEEE Merchandise Collection

If you’re hosting an IEEE event or want to order an IEEE giveaway, check out IEEE’s Merchandise Collection.

3. IEEE Islands in Second Life

IEEE Islands in Second Life is an online 3-D virtual community where IEEE members gather in a single location. These members, known as “island residents,” choose virtual characters, or “avatars,” for themselves that allow them to explore the islands. Residents can set up virtual meetings (complete with PowerPoint presentations and video), check out a student branch’s robot-building project, learn about IEEE standards, chat with other members, and more.

IEEE has created in Second Life® a virtual infrastructure and presence to support its staff, volunteer and member needs. This presence is spread across two islands and serves as a gateway for interested people to explore and participate in the activities of IEEE.

4. IEEE Standards Store

Purchase standards in the IEEE Standards Store.

5. IEEE Insights

IEEE has partnered with Forbes magazine to publish an ongoing column called IEEE Insights.
