Resources for the Member

By Abby Vogel Robinson

Each month, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  IEEE Expert Now

This is a set of training modules for IEEE volunteers.  These volunteer training modules are meant to help volunteers understand how IEEE functions and to explain the many services IEEE has to offer.

2.  Profile of IEEE Consultants

IEEE-USA has conducted surveys focusing on the compensation of consultants in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009. Other than 2009, these were standalone surveys, and they were not a part of the overall Salary & Fringe Benefits Surveys. In 2009, for the first time, the two survey efforts were combined. As a result, the sampling frame and qualifying definition of "consultant" were changed from previous implementations. And this year, the results were further filtered to those consultants who also indicated they were employed in their primary area of technical competence (PATC). Not only is the current definition different (consultants are now defined as primarily fee-based and self-employed full or part time and), but the PATC restriction does not apply this year either.

3. Tech Insider Webinar Series

If you are an engineer or technology professional, check out IEEE Spectrum Online's new series of Webinars for people who need to know what's REALLY happening in today's hottest technology fields. Leading industry experts will explore important technology developments and trendsOand get into the technical nitty-gritty. A live Q&A following each Webinar will give you the opportunity to address specific questions you might have.

4.  IEEE-USA Congressional Visits Day

The Science, Engineering and Technology Congressional Visits Day (CVD) is an annual two-day event that brings scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, and technology executives to Washington to raise visibility and support for science, engineering, and technology. Uniquely multi-sector and multi-disciplinary, CVD is coordinated by a coalition of companies, professional societies and educational institutions and it is open to all who support science and technology. The two-day program consists of a series of briefings and meetings highlighted with visits to your Congressional delegates.

5.  IEEE Presidents' Scholarship

Established in 1999, the IEEE Presidents’ Scholarship recognizes a deserving student for an outstanding project that demonstrates an understanding of electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer science, or other IEEE fields of interest.
