Resources for the Member

By Gary Blank

Each month, Today’s Engineer highlights five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  IEEE Career Alert

Career Alert is a weekly email newsletter which contains career advice plus the job of the week from the IEEE Job Site. It provides members with links to news about engineering careers, education, and professional issues. Anyone may opt-in to the newsletter.

2.  Visit us on IEEE.tv

IEEE.tv is an award winning, internet based television network, made possible by the members of IEEE. IEEE.tv produces and delivers special-interest programming about technology and engineering for the benefit of IEEE's members and the general public. It can be launched from this page, and is also accessible for members via myIEEE, the members-only portal. The IEEE.tv website provides many features free of charge to the general public. Select features as labeled below, are provided as a benefit of IEEE membership. Visit IEEE.tv today and tune in to where technology comes alive!

3. Group Disability Income Insurance

How would you pay the mortgage, make the car payment, buy groceries, pay for electricity and water, or handle any of your monthly bills if your paychecks suddenly stopped?

For a brief explanation of the IEEE Group Disability Income Insurance Plan and how it can help protect you and your family, be sure to visit the Tell Me More section to learn more about the plan, then apply for coverage today!

4.  The Institute Newsletter

IEEE members receive The Institute newsletter as a member benefit. The Institute, the newspaper of IEEE which is mailed quarterly to all members, is also available monthly on the Internet. In all of its formats, The Institute features stories about IEEE activities, member profiles, conference information, important member dates and deadlines, IEEE election news, and career guidance.

5.  Career Asset Manager

If you were faced with an unanticipated job change or unemployment, would you be ready for the tough challenges that lay ahead? Most professionals, even those who consider themselves organized, have not kept good records of their professional activities. Yet, at any moment, especially in today's precarious economic environment, you might be asked to justify your current position - or look for a new one.

Career Asset Manager (CAM) is a resource to help you keep records of all the educational, professional and personal activities that might be helpful in quickly putting together a resume or job application. CAMindex forms organize your information like a chronological resume, and may be easily adapted for other formats.
