Resources for the Member

By Gary Blank

Each month, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  Insurance Services – Medicare Supplement

You need Medicare Supplement Insurance for only one reason: Medicare doesn't pay all of your medical expenses. Supplemental insurance can help keep intact the savings you've spent a lifetime building in the event of a prolonged illness or a severe injury.

The Association-sponsored Medicare Supplement Insurance plans are designed to cover most expenses not covered by Medicare. In most states there are 10 "Standardized Plans" to choose from.

2.  IEEE Member Digital Library Free for 30 Days

The IEEE Member Digital Library brings exclusive member access to all IEEE journal articles and conference proceedings. You are eligible for a special offer—sign up today to get your free trial. You will receive a free month to download 25 IEEE articles. After your 30 day trial, subscribe to the IEEE Member Digital Library and receive 25 article downloads for US$35 per month.

3. IEEE Home/School/Office Discounts

As a value-added benefit of membership, substantial discounts can be realized by IEEE members on several products and services for the home, school and office. Active IEEE membership is a requirement for participation. Included are Alamo Car Rental, Auto Buying Service, Dell Employee Purchase Program, FedEx shipping and business services, HP Business Products, Moving and Storage, Mozy online backup, and National Car Rental.

4.  IEEE Member-Get-A-Member (MGM) Program

The Membership Benefit that pays! No one knows how beneficial IEEE membership is to technical and career development better than IEEE members. Consider sharing your IEEE membership experience and get rewarded for doing so. Through the Member-Get-a-Member program, IEEE rewards your efforts in recruiting new members. Your local IEEE Section can also benefit.

5.  IEEE Potentials Magazine

IEEE Potentials Magazine is the publication dedicated to undergraduate and graduate students and young professionals. Potentials explores career strategies, the latest in research, and important technical developments. Through its articles, it also relates theories to practical applications, highlights technology’s global impact, and generates international forums that foster the sharing of diverse ideas about the profession.

IEEE Potentials is published bi-monthly starting in January six times a year. All IEEE members have access to Potentials articles in IEEE Xplore.
