IEEE-USA Toolkit: Resources for the Member

By Abby Vogel Robinson

In each of the coming months, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  IEEE-USA Student Video Competition

IEEE-USA is launching its fourth online engineering video competition for U.S. undergraduate students on "How Engineers Make a World of Difference." IEEE-USA will present four scholarship awards totaling $5,000 to undergraduates who create the most effective 90-second video clips reinforcing for an 11-to-13-year-old audience how engineers improve the world. Entries should provide an individual profile of an engineer or technical professional and how he or she makes "a world of difference" in engineering, computing and/or technology. Entries must be submitted through YouTube by midnight EST on 21 January 2011.

2.  Discounts on DELL products

The Dell Employee Purchase Program (EPP) enables IEEE members to purchase Dell Home products at great discounts off regular pricing. On top of the discounted price, members can get additional savings from special values and promotions that can include electronics, accessories and customization. Check the EPP discounts against Dell's publicly advertised prices and you will qualify for whichever price is less at that time.

3. WISE Program

Each year, outstanding engineering students are selected to spend nine weeks during the summer in Washington, D.C., learning about the public policy process, including how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions.  The deadline for applications is 31 December 2010.

4.  IEEE.tv

IEEE.tv is an award-winning, Internet-based television network that produces and delivers special-interest programming about technology and engineering for the benefit of IEEE’s member and the general public. Its ever-growing library of programs includes videos on wind power, biomedical engineering, and on recycling computer and electronic products. New programs, recorded in high definition, are added monthly.

5.  IEEE Xtreme Programming Challenge

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE student members — supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE Member compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. Registration is open until 8 October 2010.
