IEEE-USA Toolkit: Resources for the Member

By Abby Vogel Robinson

In each of the coming months, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  AAAS Science & Engineering Mass Media Fellowship

IEEE-USA’s Mass Media Fellow works for 10 weeks during the summer as a reporter, researcher or production assistant in a mass media organization. Fellows collaborate with media professionals to enhance coverage of science- and engineering- related issues in the media in order to improve public understanding and appreciation of science and technology. Deadline for applications is Saturday, 15 January 2011.

2.  Auto and Home Insurance

IEEE offers group auto and home insurance programs with Travelers and Liberty Mutual that provide outstanding security, excellent service, competitive rates and portability. Available exclusively to IEEE members and their families, this customized selection of insurance products provides features and benefits that support members’ professional and personal needs.

3. IEEE-USA’s Public Policy Log

IEEE-USA’s chronological log of public policy communications, including testimonies, statements submitted for the record of congressional hearings, formal comments provided in response to public or regulatory notices, letters to Federal policy makers forwarding recommendations on public policy issues, and Legislative Alerts and similar notices of related government relations activities.

4.  IEEE Travel Program

The IEEE Travel Program is intended to facilitate business-required travel, while managing costs and maintaining efficient business processes. Volunteers are encouraged to make travel arrangements through the IEEE’s corporate travel agency, World Travel, Inc., whenever the purchase of fares through World Travel, Inc. is the most cost effective.

5.  IEEE-USA Professional Guideline Series

The IEEE-USA Professional Guideline Series is a collection of monographs on various non-technical subjects relating to the career, professional and public-policy interests of the IEEE’s U.S. members. Titles include “Guidelines for Professional Employment: A Framework for Communication,” “How to Communicate With Members of Congress,” “Ten Tax-Favored Ways to Save for Retirement,” “Intellectual Property and the Employee Engineer.” IEEE members can download any of the available titles free of charge.
