IEEE-USA Toolkit: Resources for the Member

By Abby Vogel Robinson

In each of the coming months, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products & services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  IEEE-USA E-Books

IEEE-USA E-Books offer a convenient way to brush up on career and policy issues. Choose from titles in a number of categories, including: careers, public policy, financial planning, innovation and more. Some titles are available as free member downloads, and most are available at heavily discounted member rates.

2.  Salary Service

U.S. IEEE members are able to use the Salary Service tool to negotiate better salaries with their employers. The Calculator allows you to search on a variety of fields, including geographic, level of education, industry, years of employment, level of management experience, etc. Based on current IEEE-USA Salary Survey data, the Service provides you with a salary history; updateable salary survey; and individual salary comparator for each year that you have completed the Salary Survey. Now you can keep track of how your salary tracks your career progress, how it measures up to your peers’, and what effect contemplated job or career moves can have on your compensation.

3. Entrepreneurs Village

The Entrepreneurs Village was launched to meet a growing need of U.S. IEEE members who are business owners with 3-100 employees. The village is open to all members and will provide members with mentors who can help entrepreneurs work through issues related to starting and operating a small technology business.

4.  IEEE-USA Committee Meetings & Conferences

Much of the work of IEEE-USA is done by volunteer members working on IEEE-USA’s councils, committees and networks.

IEEE-USA also co-sponsors technical conferences on topics such as energy, RFID and homeland security technologies.

5.  IEEE-USA on Twitter

IEEE-USA has a Twitter account, where you can read the latest news, learn about new programs, products and services, and connect with other U.S. IEEE members.
