IEEE-USA Toolkit: Resources for the Member

By Gary Blank

In each of the coming months, Today’s Engineer will highlight five different programs, products and services from IEEE-USA and elsewhere around the IEEE,  designed to help the members with their careers and professional development. Whether you're a student trying to select a focus, if you're just starting your career, or if you're getting close to retirement, IEEE has a wealth of resources to help you at every stage of your professional life.

1.  Career Development Courses

Take advantage of online career development courses in topics, including: Basic Principles for a Collaborative Workplace, Coaching Bringing out the Best in Others, Conducting a Collaborative Performance Review, Expressing Yourself: Presenting Your Thoughts and Ideas, Giving and Receiving Constructive Feedback, Giving Recognition Handling Emotions Under Pressure, Identifying Work Priorities and Setting Verifiable Goals, and many more.

2.  IEEE Group Term Life Insurance

For more than 40 years, IEEE has worked with Marsh U.S. Consumer to offer a group insurance program that provides the high quality, competitive cost, superior convenience and wide choice IEEE members have come to expect from products endorsed by IEEE. Available exclusively to IEEE members and their families, all of these plans feature economical rates and are not tied to where you work or what you do.

3. IEEE-USA Career Check-Up

How is your career going? What else can you do to make sure that you get the most from your working life?  Has this been the best year of your working career or is your career moving OK, “with room for improvement”? Or are you thinking of changing jobs?  Will you soon be retiring or do you have career issues? Use this quick career check-up to see where you are and gain information about how to ensure on-going success.

4.  IEEE Mentoring Connection

The IEEE Mentoring Connection is an online program that facilitates the matching of IEEE members for the purpose of establishing a mentoring partnership. Participation in the program is open to all IEEE members above the Student Member grade. If you fit this criteria, you could be a mentor to another IEEE member (mentee) or be a mentee and be coached by a member.

5.  IEEE-USA on LinkedIn

IEEE-USA has a LinkedIn group, where you can read the latest news, learn about new programs, products and services, and connect with other U.S. IEEE members.
