DBIS – Reliable Science on Local TV News

By Pender M. McCarter

As a part of its ongoing efforts to improve the public's understanding of engineering and engineering concepts, IEEE-USA has been a partner in the Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS) program since 2005. DBIS provides accurate science, technology, engineering and mathematical news in an easily understood, visual format to the millions who watch local TV news on a daily basis, to a growing international audience and web news media syndicators. The goal of DBIS is to increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of the role of science and technology in society.

DBIS is a science and engineering news service producing twelve 90-second TV reports a month (a total of 144 reports a year) with rich visuals and diverse STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) topics. Syndicated to local TV news stations across the United States, international news operations and web aggregators, DBIS also has a Spanish language version and a Website component. DBIS news has been experimentally proven to increase awareness and appreciation of STEM research in viewing audiences.

DBIS Quick facts
U.S. audience reach:47 million audience views per month minimum on TV
International audience reach: 200 million people view DBIS through the Middle East Broadcasting Center
Nearly 200 U.S. news stations receive DBIS each month
Science Daily audience reach: 4 million total views per year
23 scientific, technical, engineering and mathematical societies are partners

What’s new with DBIS

AIP has revamped its Inside Science News Service (ISNS) at: http://www.insidescience.org/ to target news editors in shrinking news operations — focusing on newspapers and their websites as well as wire services and other major web news aggregators.  DBIS is contributing stories, content and visuals to this effort.  The new ISNS website integrates DBIS and ISNS for news editors.  This provides opportunities for our DBIS Partners to also reach news editors for print and other news media operations.

IEEE-USA and DBIS

DBIS produced 38 segments for IEEE-USA in  2009.  Based on Nielsen SIGMA tracking that estimates the minimum TV audience reach for these 38 stories is 103 million views.
