IEEE-USA E-Books: Continuing to Offer IEEE Members Valuable References & Resources

By Sharon Richardson

IEEE-USA E-Books are alive, well — and growing! IEEE-USA has now published 27 e-books on such topics as employment, careers, government relations, consulting, entrepreneurship, innovation, professional activities and technology policy, as well as several volumes compiled from the Today’s Engineer archives — and all the books are available at a low, discounted price (some are free) for IEEE members.

Whether you are searching for information on consulting, innovation, salary surveys, or personal and professional development, you will find it in the pages of IEEE-USA e-books.

2008 IEEE-USA Program Book (Free for IEEE Members)

In IEEE-USA’s most recent e-book, the 2008 IEEE-USA Program Book, IEEE-USA Managing Director Chris Brantley brings awareness to readers about IEEE-USA’s mission and goals. He highlights IEEE-USA programs developed to:

  • Promote the professional, social, economic and ethical status of engineering

  • Provide technical advice and policy perspective to U.S. policy-makers

  • Bring products and services supporting the professional development and career vitality needs of U.S. IEEE members

  • Support communications with and among U.S. IEEE members

  • Enhance public awareness and understanding of electrical, electronic and computer engineering and related technical fields

The Program Book also highlights IEEE-USA’s mission and purpose: to recommend policies and implement programs specifically to serve and benefit the members, engineering professionals and general public in the United States, as well as IEEE-USA’s Strategic Goals for 2008-2012, and the strategic focus that supports those goals. In 2008, IEEE-USA will be focusing on:

  • Promoting innovation and competitiveness

  • Supporting K-12 math and science education to encourage technical literacy and train future technologists

  • Offering increased member value in products and services

  • Providing serious, career-long continuing education to maintain a competitive U.S. work force and preserve careers

To know more about IEEE-USA, its programs, products and services, download the 2008 IEEE-USA Program Book. It’s free for IEEE members. The price is $9.99 for non-members.

IEEE-USA 2007 Annual Report (Free for IEEE Members)

Another great e-book to download is the IEEE-USA 2007 Annual Report. Compiled and edited by IEEE-USA Senior Public Relations Counselor Pender M. McCarter, IEEE-USA’s Annual Report highlights IEEE-USA activities and accomplishments in 2007.

This e-book begins with a letter from 2007 IEEE-USA President John Meredith, commending IEEE-USA volunteers and staff for helping to achieve such accomplishments as the passing of the America Competes Act in both the House and the Senate. The Act authorized $43.3 billion in federal spending for basic research. Meredith also highlights the successful launch of IEEE-USA’s Innovation Institute, which held its first Web-based seminar in July 2007, and its first IEEE Regional workshop in November 2007. He emphasizes that innovation is an important part of IEEE-USA’s strategic focus.

Other than highlighting the major achievements and new products and services, IEEE-USA’s Annual Report is also a photo journal of IEEE-USA’s 2007 achievements — another good way to become familiar with IEEE-USA volunteers and staff. You will find a photograph of the first Innovation Institute Workshop in Falls Church, Virginia. The Institute’s workshop was focused on the key aspects of the innovation process, including product development and corporate culture. You’ll also see a photograph of 2007 IEEE-USA President John Meredith speaking with a Member of Congress at IEEE-USA’s annual Congressional Visits Day on Capitol Hill. Meredith spoke with several legislators in support of increased research and development funding.

Some other photos in the book include 2007 IEEE-USA Career Activity Vice-President Paul Kostek testifying before the House Science Subcommittee on the Implications of Globalization of R&D and Innovation; a photo of the IEEE-USA-sponsored 2007 Washington Internship for Students of Engineering interns; and the Engineering Family Day event in Washington, D.C.

This e-book is available as a free IEEE member download. To download your free copy, go to http://salary.ieee.org, and log-in with your IEEE Web account information. Then, scroll down the page to product number UH3371.

The Best of Today’s Engineer: On World Bytes (Vol. 1)

IEEE-USA E-Books has also published a new e-book in the Best of Today’s Engineer series: The Best of Today’s Engineer: On World Bytes (Vol. 1). Written by Terrance Malkinson, communications specialist, business analyst, futurist and volunteer editor-in-chief of IEEE-USA Today’s Engineer Digest, this e-book has 61 pages filled with thought provoking topics such as Look Within for Personal Fulfillment; Sleep for Success; Overcoming the Urge to Be Average; Internationalize your Career; The Habit of Pause; Reflecting on Resumes; Childhood and Adult Obesity; Festivals; and the Global Community of Values.

Under each topic the author includes a Thought to Chew On and Other Bits and Bytes highlighting and summarizing other resource and reference materials and articles that readers will find of value as they take on life’s challenges.

The Best of Today’s Engineer: On World Bytes (Vol.1) is only $4.95 for IEEE Members and $19.95 for Non-Members.

Profile of IEEE Consultants 2007

Prepared by R.H. Gauger, P.E., IEEE Life Senior Member, member and past national chair of the Alliance of IEEE Consultants’ Networks, and a Distinguished Engineering Achievement and IEEE Millennium award winner, the Profile of IEEE Consultants 2007 is the fifth comprehensive national fee survey that the Alliance of IEEE Consultants Networks (AICN) has conducted on its members.

This profile was prepared to give a consultant or potential consultant the information they need to prepare or negotiate a contract that is competitive and fair. The survey provides profiles of a typical self-employed and independent consultant, including education, experience, business practices and specialty. Readers may find the data regarding the typical consultant’s median earnings and hourly fee of particular interest in this e-book. This e-book contains 21 pages of current data, plus a review of the fee data from earlier surveys.

This valuable resource can be downloaded for the low member price of $9.95. It’s $19.95 for non-members.

Ideas for new e-Books

IEEE-USA E-Books invites IEEE members and volunteers to submit queries for e-books they may want to write. If you’ve got an idea for an e-book that will educate other IEEE members on a particular topic of expertise, e-mail your e-book queries and ideas to IEEE-USA Publishing Manager Georgia Stelluto at g.stelluto@ieee.org.
