IEEE-USA E-Books Offer IEEE Members Valuable References and Resources

By Sharon Richardson

Need to know the ins and outs of consulting? Searching for information on electric energy reliability? Want tips on writing a resume? Or would you like to know how to communicate with members of Congress? Check out IEEE-USA's e-books [www.ieeeusa/communications/ebooks] for a diversified array of valuable references and resources on these topics and more, offered to members for free, or at a low, discounted member price.

IEEE-USA launched its e-book publishing program in 2006 to provide useful and educational information on topics pf interest to the IEEE’s U.S. members. The e-book format provides a medium for delivering a wealth of information in one concentrated resource, in an easily downloadable PDF format, and at an affordable price. IEEE-USA envisions offering IEEE members quality original and compilation e-books at great prices that would both assist them in their career guidance and development, and help educate and inform IEEE members on tech policy topics of interest to engineers.

IEEE-USA’s catalog is growing to include e-books on a wide range of subjects within the organization’s overall purview of advancing members’ careers and influencing public policy. Currently, IEEE-USA offers 17 e-books. Here’s an overview of some popular titles from our e-book library:

The Best of Today’s Engineer Series

The Best of Today’s Engineer (TE) e-books are very popular among those members purchasing IEEE-USA e-books. These compilations are great reference and research tools, providing many articles on a particular topic conveniently available in one e-book.

A new e-book in this series has just been released: The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Career Transitions. This e-book includes approximately 125 pages of articles that help members prepare for, and cope with, career changes. When Paul Kostek, IEEE-USA vice-president of Career Policy, read this e-book, he said: “When one door closes, another door opens. Change is a given in engineering careers, and today’s job market offers incredible opportunities to those willing to face career challenges and changes head-on. The compilation of articles in The Best of TE: On Career Transitions can help members handle many situations they may face in their careers; take advantage of whatever opportunities come their way; and motivate them to be prepared, be aware, and be willing to take chances –- turning career transitions into new career paths.”

Nonmembers pay $9.95. Members pay $4.95, and can purchase this e-book by going to www.ieeeusa.org/e-books/July.

The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Consulting was the first e-book published and the first in the Best of TE series. It gives the reader information on how to start a consultant’s network, get paid for it, and how to make the transition from marketing to paid consultant. The book also includes a sample contract, and a copy of the IEEE-USA’s 2004 Profile of Consultants. The book is useful to anyone who is considering consulting, providing a good list of things to consider.

Another e-book in The Best of TE series, The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Career Survival, highlights the skills needed to survive in a changing job market, especially for engineers.

IEEE members can purchase the e-books in the Best of Today’s Engineer series for less than $5.00 –- a great value for a lot of reference material.

Tech Policy E-Books

IEEE-USA also offers e-books of interest to members in the tech policy area, such as RFID: The State of Radio Frequency Identification Implementation and Policy Implications, by IEEE-USA’s Committee on Communications Policy Committee (CCP). This e-book provides a basic introduction to RFID technology and surveys the current state of its implementation.

NHIN: Interoperability for the National Health Information Network, by IEEE-USA’s Medical Technology Policy Committee Interoperability Working Group, discusses the role of standards in guaranteeing interoperability, and provides a taxonomy of standards for developing the NHIN.

E-books may be valuable to different groups of readers for different reasons. For example, the CCP developed the RFID e-book as a resource to help explain the basics of RFID technology to policy-makers here in Washington, but reader feedback indicates that a number of members found it to be a useful primer for engineers considering RFID as new career field.

Free E-Books

A few selected IEEE-USA e-books are offered for a limited time for free, such as the IEEE-USA Program Book, the IEEE-USA Unemployment Survey Results, the IEEE-USA Consultant’s Profile, and the 2006 Consultants’ Fee Survey. And to motivate members to renew their IEEE membership, upon renewal, members can select a free IEEE-USA e-book of their choice.

IEEE-USA is putting out a call for e-books –- and invites IEEE volunteers and members to submit queries for e-books they may want to write. If you've got an idea for an e-book that will educate other IEEE members on a particular topic of expertise, e-mail your e-book queries and ideas to IEEE-USA Publishing Manager Georgia Stelluto [g.stelluto@ieee.org].

You can purchase IEEE-USA e-books –- and download your free ones –- at www.ieeeusa.org/communications/ebooks.
